Prematurely, moms wrap the house in the school colors to show the neighborhood where his/her child will be going next year. Everyone races home on the same day to check their mail to see which school sent a congratulations notice. I've seen dads play this game to, but nowhere to the personal statement it makes for these moms. For months, they ask each other, so where does your child want to go? It is a reflection on them. As stressful as the situation is for the 13 year olds, this process can be even more of social suicide for the mother.

And that third choice is the safety school, AKA the co-ed Catholic school.

These schools have feelings and don't take lightly to being a student's second choice if they consider themselves a first choice school. Your 1st choice school must match with you or else your second choice may not match because you did not put them as a first choice. If anyone ever rushed a sorority, the process is the same. At some point in the 1st quarter of the fall semester, the student must write down their three choices, in order. Eighth grade is graduation year, and the most vital part of this year is getting accepted into high school. With that last comment, I have to make a side note to explain the Catholic school selection process. 'Oh, that's great, you'll like this or that.' And then they whisper to each other, what do you think went wrong? Could they not afford it? Was he/she struggling with grades? Second, when someone asks you where you are going and you respond one of these schools, the response is the same. First, it is thought that your parents are very Catholic and simply won't send you to a public school or you are not a serious student. Then there are the co-educational Catholic schools. The determination is either your parents couldn't afford to send you there or you couldn't get in to the other top tier. These don't cost as much and everyone knows it. There are other inferior Catholic schools such as the all-boy/all-girl ones that are subsidized by the archdiocese. Either way, there is a respect among this clan. There are some that say that you have more money than others and some try to play the academically superior card. For the cost of a modest college education, and if you are lucky to be chosen, you can attend one of these tight-knit schools. There are 11 all-boy/all-girl Catholic high schools that rule the athletic and social scene. What high school you attended tells us everything we need to know. It tells us what your parents' financial background is (and how they spent their money), what your social circle may be, and what part of town you are from (which I explained in the last post why it is important). What high school you went to tells us everything we need to know about you. But here, high school is one of the most important social standings that one can possess for their resume. Pimples, braces, curfews, and too scared to have sex, why would I want to relive those years? I had sooo much more fun ever since then. I always pitied those folks that longed to relive high school. Spend an evening at a party or an afternoon on a soccer sideline, but talk to someone longer than 30 minutes and the inevitable question will be asked, 'Where did you go to high school?' It doesn't take a transplant long to get the St. It somes up the Coasts, but what about us here in the middle of the USA? If we are tragically anything, what defines us? And that answer is simple- 'high school.'
